Wraith Names – Background & Tips

Ghost names sound like fading memories – ethereal, shadowy and permeated by past lives. Our Ghost Name Generator creates atmospheric names for D&D 5e, Pathfinder, horror roleplaying games and Gothic fantasy. Ghosts are the remnants of the deceased who could not pass on to the next world for various reasons.

Ghost and Wraith names combine human name elements with gloomy, shadowy terms. Names like Ashreaver, Duskwail, Echofall or Phantomveil evoke ethereal remnants. Many ghosts retain their human name, but corrupted or faded – a former knight might be called 'Sir Grayhen', faded to 'Grayvhen'.

In D&D 5e there are various ghost types: Ghosts, Spectres, Wraiths, Shadows, Banshees and Phantoms. Each has a different backstory and naming convention. Banshees are often the ghosts of female elven spellcasters; their names sound correspondingly melodic-mournful.

In other horror systems like Vampire: The Masquerade or Hunter: The Reckoning, ghosts play a major role. In Ghostbusters, Harry Potter (as Peeves or the Headless ones), in Spirited Away or in the Japanese Yokai tradition – ghost beings have developed fascinating naming traditions worldwide.

For your D&D ghost antagonist or horror character: choose a name reflecting the ethereal and the sorrow of transition. Shadow terms, natural phenomena and faded human names combined fit perfectly. Use our generator for male and female ghost names.
